Merchants Square began in 1928 as a vision of revitalization by John D. Rockefeller, Jr., the son of the Standard Oil CEO. The plan was to relocate the scattered shops in the district to a central location along what is now known as Duke of Gloucester Street, between the College of William & Mary and the Historic District. Merchants Square was designed to incorporate the many perspectives that helped shape the British Colonial and early American landscape, mixing the designs of American architects, such as Thomas Jefferson, with the building influences of Caribbean warehouses.
Today, Merchants Square boasts more than 40 shops and restaurants, from Colonial-inspired souvenirs, a classic candy store and a William & Mary campus store, to cooking and kitchen supplies, men’s and women’s fashion, fine jewelry and accessories and quaint bookstores. Local restaurants entice visitors with a wide range of rich and savory entrées for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and some places even provide live musical entertainment for guests to enjoy while they dine.
Merchants Square hosts an abundant number of events each week. Every Friday at 6 p.m., The Trellis Bar and Grill’s Jazz on the Half Shell event invites you to listen in on a local musician while sampling signature cocktails and fresh local oysters. On Wednesday evenings during the months of July and August, bring your lawn chair and a picnic to Merchants Square’s Summer Breeze Concert Series, where bands perform a variety of genres from pop to dance.
From April through October, Merchants Square hosts a weekly farmers market every Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon. At the farmers market, you are sure to walk away with the best in locally sourced vegetables, pasture-raised meats, fresh bread, homemade pastries, eggs and more.
With so much to see and do while in Merchants Square, it’s worth spending the day!

Riverwalk Landing links the Yorktown Victory Center and Yorktown Battlefield in a one-mile pedestrian walkway on the York River. Park your car in the free, two-tier, 270-space parking terrace conveniently located for our visitors or dock your boat at the pier. Specialty shops, designed in the spirit of Colonial architecture, offer patriotic items, home decor, jewelry, clothing, art, photography, books, beach supplies and more. Dine at unique restaurants on the waterfront serving seafood and other fine cuisine. Stop by Water Street Grille and enjoy artisan pizzas, tapas, microbrews and live entertainment all with a river view. Carrot Tree, a Yorktown tradition, offers breakfast, lunch, bakery and deli items, all prepared from scratch, including fresh-baked goods, wraps, salads, soups and famous desserts at this quaint sidewalk café. Don’t miss the monthly wine and beer dinners, oyster roasts and literary teas at the Riverwalk restaurants. Or grab an ice cream cone or gourmet latte, and enjoy it as you stroll by the river or sit on the beach.
Arrange to rent a bike and ride around the Yorktown National Battlefield, the village or up the Colonial Parkway. Enjoy guided Segway adventure tours of the village in all seasons on any day that weather permits. Explore the waters on a pirate adventure cruise or sunset sail aboard Schooners Alliance and Serenity, rent a kayak or paddleboard or make your own fun on the beach. Benches lining the walk offer visitors the chance to sit and admire the natural beauty of the York River.
The restored historic Freight Shed is available to rent as an events venue for small receptions and meetings. The waterfront features a performance area, an inviting beach and two floating piers—one to support larger vessels, such as regional cruise ships, and visiting tall ships, and the other for smaller personal watercraft, such as day-trippers and pleasure boaters visiting the village, shops and restaurants. A free trolley runs daily from spring through fall offering many stops throughout town and arrives approximately every 20 minutes to each stop. Visitors are encouraged to park in any of the public parking areas located throughout the village and hop on the trolley to enjoy the varied sights and sounds of historic Yorktown.
On many weekends throughout the year, visitors can enjoy live entertainment at Riverwalk Landing. It’s not unusual to see strolling performers or hear beach music one day and then find yourself listening to patriotic, jazz or country music the next. Of course, the holiday season is a special occasion here at river’s edge with a variety of events and performers to get your toes tappin’ and keep you coming back for more.
